djinguereber mosque

As i walked up to the Djinguereber mosque, i questioned the importance of these weird wooden poles ran through the the whole thing. I asked one of the locals what they were for, i didn’t quite understand what he said. When i walked through the entrance, i would have thought that it was some type of fortress if i didn’t have the prior knowledge of it being a mosque. There were three tall, pointy, tan/gray structures built in the wall on the front side. It was the stereotypical castle…. Except for the fact that it is a mosque. It looks like it could be very spiky, from everything from the towers to the  poles running through it all. The building is about 35 ft tall, and it is probably the size of half of a football field. Just from the architecture on the outside, i was amazed.
